Venice picks

Monday, April 21, 2003

I went to Venice a couple of weeks ago and have just gotten round to writing down a couple of handy tips for the tourist of Venice. All the tips revolve around food and drink. Generally food in Venice is crap. 200 years of being a tourist destination has beaten the Italian love of food out of the Venetians so they’ll happily take a big stack of your money then serve you terrible food.

First… Food. The best restaurant was a tiny little four table place called Anima Bella. Located by a canal on Calle Fiubera. Try the risotto, its one of the best I’ve had. The lady who serves was very friendly, helpful and spoke about a dozen languages.

Secondly… Bars. The best place we found was the Enoteca Mascareta, on Calle S.M. Formosa. I did a quick google for it and unsurprisingly gets good reviews from a whole bunch of people.

Lastly… Gelato. The little gelati bar outside the Hotel Noemi (where we stayed), is excellent. It’s on Calle dei Fabri. However it’s only open till about 9 or 10. So get in early. The tiramisu flavour is wonderful, the rum and cherry gets my mouth watering now just thinking about it.

My new LomoHome

Monday, April 21, 2003

Check out my LomoHome. The site does automated lomo walls. Just stick in a few lomo pics and it generates a random collage. Beautiful and unpredictable… just like the lomo.

While you’re at it check out Heather’s LomoHome. My partner in crime and photography tutor.

BBC NEWS runs a crass flash movie on urban warfare. Jumping on the glitz and glamour of the military masturbation going around.

Collosal Squid Alert

Monday, April 7, 2003

A new larger meaner squid species has been confirmed by our friends in NZ at the AUT. See the BBC news piece on it.

“Now we can say that it attains a size larger than the giant squid. Giant squid is no longer the largest squid that’s out there. We’ve got something that’s even larger, and not just larger but an order of magnitude meaner.”

Bigger and an order of magnitude meaner. Fetch me my harpoon Queequeg, I’m going squid hunting.

For those squid enthusiasts here’s a squid/octopus database from Canada with pictures and videos.

Flash identikit

Incredbily detailed identikit style flash based online face builder. The effort that has gone into the components is great. One could have lots of fun pretending to be a policeman with this.
