William Gibson has hopped on the blog bandwagon. A self confessed luddite who wrote his first couple of books on typewriters has joined the digerati. I’ve read the first two entries and they are typical blog fare, but at least a step above Wil Wheaton.
Which reminds me; I’ve always been amused by Neal Stephenson’s home page on the Well. It basically says… “Fuck off I’m too busy to update my website. if you want to talk to me i’ve got agents to do that for me.” Author’s vary greatly in their response to the public. Take Greg Egan who has snippets of fiction and java applets that illustrate his stories to keep his fans amused.
Is Stephenson too extreme? Should authors spend time communicating with their public effectively with no return? Should these people be asking for subscriptions to support themselves?
