Dangerous Visions ed. Harlan Ellison

Tuesday, January 7, 2003

Generally somewhat dated as it’s over 30 years old. All the best stories are at the beginning and the end. The middle has more of the unknown and/or slipstream authors. It would I think have done well to have had a Ballard or Amis story as ol’ Harlan said he wanted.

Also there is probably as much HE editorial ranting as there are short stories. While having intros I think is a great idea most of HEs are diatribes against individuals, many of them in the book… in his 3 or 4 page intro there might be a paragraph of bio. My advice, unless you’re a sci-fi bibliophile stay well clear of them, the book will be half the length and more enjoyable.
