Darknets will win

Friday, November 29, 2002

A couple of interesting blog posts about a paper presented by Microsoft to an ACM conference on DRM. One from peerfear, one from cory doctorow at boingboing. The authors and not microsoft say that darknets will win in the end, and if you can’t beat em you ought to join em. That all the DRM activity and the work to bring down these networks will actually disincentive any commercial activity in this area. DRM wrapped products are less attractive than open versions, even for consumers intending to use them for purely legal purposes (which anyone who has tried to move WMA files from machine to machine in perfect innocence can attest to).

Wonderful to watch a pleasure to play with. I can just sit for hours (some exageration) and watch it’s little lego like blocks slot into place. Go on have a play with Distorter.net’s do it yourself builder.

Bring the mountain to Mohammed

30 years ago NASA predicted that there would be a fully presurized moon base by 2003. Sadly not to be the case, their dreams have not come to fruition. But that’s not the american way, if you can’t go to the moon, how about bringing the Moon to Las Vegas bringing the Moon to Las Vegas. Complete with it’s own lunar golf course (golf is still the most popular sport on the moon), space shuttle monorail and full size saturn rockets and accompanied by a sound track ripped off from tubular bells and jarre the Moon Casino has everything I could possibly want from a trip to the Moon and more….

After much wailing and gnashing of teeth messing with do it yourself photo albums I’ve decided to bite the bullet and use a commercial site… and I must say I am impressed, it looks great, no advertising, is fast and has much better functionality. Would I love to see their business plan.

Here are all my old photo’s. The links in the top right should soon link to this site too. I should do some more scanning soon and put up some new ones.

Mexico Fotos

Mexico pictures from earlier this year. I have to find some cheap and easy way to get my pictures online… and digital cameras just aren’t up to my poor lost lomo’s standard of weirdness and random effects. And some of the colour shots from mehico are from my poor little MIA lomo.

Sam & Max hit the road again

Monday, November 25, 2002

One of my all time favourite games, spin off cartoon series, t-shirt, novelty beer coaster series Sam and Max Hit the road, is getting a sequel. Ten years in the making… or maybe that’s ten years to escape the statute of limitations… we get treated to the follow up game of everyone’s favourite dog and rabbit detective duo.

For a bit of nostalgia here’s the
opening sequence from the original.

What does the kitten say?

Miaow miaow, miaow miaow miaow!

More from the too-much-time-on-their-hands files…

Two of my favourite things mixed together, Lego and Escher. There’s plenty more on his site but my favourite is Escher’s Belvedere.

Shades of Black

I’m particularly fond of this bit I just wrote. Word count is approaching 13k. Just 37k more to go this month. Gak.

“Who are… I!” The body of the Dancer spoke with force, more statement of existence than question. All the other bodies were still. Their eyes had now all turned and were all looking at the Dancer.

“This is an interesting phenomena.” The Professor commented to no one in particular as he stood up and replaced his spectacles.

“I’m not getting a good feeling about this. Professor, find the erroneous subject and terminate it immediately.” The Bishop tried to rise from his chair. His Aide rushing forwards from the shadows to help him lever his bulk upright.

“Who am I?” The Dancer asked staring with unearthly intent at the Professor approaching from the centre of the circle. He walked towards her unperturbed by the cold abyss staring out of the Dancer’s eyes.
